The Art and Science of Bringing Heart-Centered Yoga to Life

Heart of the Village Yoga School is an annual  one-of-a kind teacher-training and advanced studies program facilitated by Bob Speck and Jo Kirsch. Founded in the yoga practices of classical yoga and meditation, integrated with the study of yoga philosophy and ancient wisdom and enhanced with the heart-opening and life-enhancing practices of Bhakti and Karma Yoga, in the Studio, out in your Life and outside in Nature. Our program offers depth, fun, community, and an opportunity to transform your life through committed practice in yoga and teaching. The program is designed for dedicated yoga students who wish to enhance their connection to yoga and spirituality, aspiring yoga teachers, as well as current teachers who are seeking to bring more depth to their practice and teaching through continued study. Heart School creates an opportunity for trainees to deepen their spiritual path through self-exploration and build a strong foundation for teaching yoga in a soulful, imaginative, and integrative way.


  • Experiential-learning format wherein we learn by studying, practicing, and reflecting in small and large group formats.
  • Yoga Philosophy, utilizing readings, movies, and discussion, investigating various schools of thought. Bringing these philosophies to life!
  • Practice and teach Vinyasa Flow Yoga and more gentle Restorative Yoga, based on adaptations of sequences and postures first presented to the West by students of Krishnamacharya in the 20th century. We are students of the students of these teachers. 
  • Practice and teach therapeutic Yin Yoga, based on the sequences and postures developed in the last few decades by Western teachers, including our teacher Biff Mithoefer, author of “The Yin Yoga Kit” and “The Therapeutic Yin Yoga Kit”.
  • Bringing Bhakti Yoga to the mat and into your lives, learning mantras, chanting, kirtan (call-and-response singing), and daily heart-opening practices.
  • Intensive study of Yoga Postures (Asanas) and Sequencing; careful attention to Alignment of Postures for Every Body
  • Interactive and hands-on study of Anatomy and Physiology, utilizing modern texts and current scientific information
  • Teaching Special Populations, including people with visible and invisible disabilities
  • Yoga for Emotional Well Being 
  • Yoga and Nature
  • The Art of Teaching Yoga

Our 200 and 300 Hour Courses have a standard of excellence and are in compliance with the standards of the nationally recognized Yoga Alliance. Heart of the Village Yoga is a Registered Yoga School with Yoga Alliance.

The biggest lesson that I’ve taken from this training is the power of practice, both in yoga and beyond. I was a little stuck when this training began, and it’s hard to express just how encouraging it’s been to feel myself progressing in my yoga practice. I feel that I now have the knowledge to address my problem areas over time, or at least to seek out the necessary resources. It’s reaffirming to know that there is always room to grow, and I’m working to apply that idea to other aspects of my life. This training has also made it clear to me that living a good life isn’t enough: it’s important to live a conscious life, and invest the effort necessary to earn the sweetness that life has to offer. “I have found my voice through teaching. Ever since I took my first yoga class I have always wanted to sit in the cushion up front and be the one teaching. Through the training that love has deepened and I can whole heartedly say I believe my passion is teaching. I don’t know what I want to do when I grow up, maybe I will teach yoga or culinary arts or medicine. But I now know I love to teach.

My hope is to take this love and teach yoga during college, maybe even before. Obviously I don’t know what the future will hold, but I do know the eight limb path has helped prepare me for the outside world. It has taught me to face everything with love and gratitude. I have a constant effort to be present and do everything mindfully and joyfully.
