Sukah Sundays: Monthly Restorative Yoga Workshop

with Kaitlyn Z. Tyler, RYT 500 This workshop series is a monthly invitation to find ease in your body, mind, and heart. Sukah in Sanskrit translates to sweetness— happiness, joy, and bliss. We will embody this sweetness with a nourishing restorative yoga practice by candlelight. Restorative yoga allows us to relax into poses, without strain or pain, so that we can achieve physical, mental and emotional relaxation. Our parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated when we relax into poses, which promotes a relaxation response— slowing your heart rate and breath and increasing blood flow to your vital organs— reducing stress in the body and mind. As we hold postures, the deeper layers of our physical body are able to release. This is a great practice to balance an active schedule and an excellent way to practice self care. We start each workshop by reviewing the postures we will be taking during the practice.

Yoga Saved My Life

In 1991, I hurt my back bouncing around in a motor boat. A friend suggested I visit a chiropractor for my back and she suggested I try yoga to loosen up my tight muscles and quiet my monkey mind. I was hooked from the get-go. For 10 years I attended gentle Hatha and Kripalu yoga classes and began to consider learning to teach yoga. In 2001, I completed a 5-year process of becoming a fully-certified Alpine Ski Instructor and was motivated to keep learning and teaching. In August of that year, I attended a five-day yoga teacher training with Beryl Bender Birch at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. I fell in love with Beryl and the classical active style of Astanga Yoga. Beryl taught with passion, compassion and wisdom. I went on to study with Beryl for many years and attained my 500-Hour Teacher Training Certification through her school,
